Best Dog Accessories for the Cold – The Ultimate Winter Proofing Guide

A cold air approaches, you turn to see if your mother-in-law stopped by.. she’s not there. It must be something else. You walk across the living room. Maybe the Night King is coming you think? But no, Game of Thrones isn’t on either. Winter.. Winter is actually coming, as the seasons would have it! In the corner you see your dog, looking mildly cold. It strikes you all at once, your dog is your extension of your family and MUST BE WINTERPROOFED.

We understand your concern, and we got your back. This is our complete guide to winter proofing your dog for those cold winter months. Outside of cranking up the heater, there are two main categories for this.

  1. The things your dog is wearing
  2. Where your dog is sleeping

Luckily, there are many options to combat the wicked trials of nature. Fear not dog owners, warmth lies ahead

The first step of our journey in winter preparation involves the most important aspect of all, shelter! This is assuming your dog will be staying outside sometimes, or even some nights.

Heating pads are a lot more reliable than they used to be. The Lectro-Soft doesn’t come with the igloo in the picture, but it does come with a 1 year warranty. It’s called “igloo style” because it’s shaped as a half circle.  As we know, dogs bodies aren’t made in square shapes. So this is great for sleeping on their side.To make it easy to clean, it has a removable fleece cover. One of the main complaints people have is that it doesn’t come with the igloo! We might have fallen for that too at first…

Water Resistant Dog Shoes with Reflective Velcro and Rugged Anti-Slip Sole

A vibrant red fabric and anti- slip soles catch your eyes when you first set sight on My Busy Dog’s shoes. All of their fabrics are sewn together so that they last longer. Heat won’t effect them as much as other soles. We really like the waffle pattern of the anti slip sole, it helps “grab” at the ground for traction.

They have reflective stitching and velcro straps. A wide split seam means that the shoe has a little give for your dogs potentially big feet. Best of all there are color choices, something lacking in previous brands. These come in red, orange, green, and black.

While this looks like something you would see the Kardashians put on their dogs, they still have a cute charm in a way. They’re stitched all the way up and down, and the fabric doesn’t appear to have much give. They have a solid rubber sole.

Not the most adjustable nor the tightest fit on our list, but we really do like that they have a very strong sole. LONSUNEER Paw Protector Dog Boots Soft Sole

lonsuneer paw protector

Our first review of a soft sole shoe. Water resistant, reflective, with a nonslip sole.  What makes these a good option is that they are soft all around. If your dog has a hard time fitting into shoes, the flexibility will make it much easier. And if your dog likes wiggling out of shoes, these are easy to get a snug fit on with a loop velcro strap.

Being softer on the soles, your dog will feel more. So we recommend these for terrain you are familiar with. Not our top choice for rough terrain.

Should I get a dog bed or a dog house?

This depends on a few things. Dog beds are fine for indoor use, but if you are thinking of putting one outside to keep your friend comfortable.. it’s not gonna last long! When you are looking for something outdoors, we definitely recommend a dog house. Additionally, this will shield your dog from the elements and give them a safe space. If they’ve been crate trained, they will prefer this option as well. If it gets to a decent drop in temperature there are many insulated and even heated options for dog houses that will work in short bursts. In that type of weather you should bring your dog inside, and the dog house.

We hope you and your dog are ready to face winter HEAD ON. Hopefully some of these trinkets will help you on your journey. If you have any funny winter stories about your dog, let us know 🙂

Why buy a dog bed?

Well.. why buy a mattress for yourself? Dogs have bones, muscles, and aches just like us. Especially when they get older. Sleeping on carpet or tile isn’t fun, try it yourself sometime and see how long you last. You should buy a dog bed for the comfort of your pet. If your dog is older, you can look into getting them an orthopedic option. Softer is better on joints that need it.

We hope you and your dog are ready to face winter HEAD ON. Hopefully some of these trinkets will help you on your journey. If you have any funny winter stories about your dog, let us know 🙂

More Bite Than Bark, 10 Of The Toughest Dog Toys

dog chewing
Look at me I’m tough

Dog toys aren’t cheap, and if they keep getting ripped up it will add up to a significant amount at the end of the year. Maybe you could have had a nice steak dinner with the money you saved. We might be a little bit hungry.

Does your dog have an alter ego of a great white shark?

If they shred every toy you give them and you’re sick of hemorrhaging money; we have a list of dog toys that might be somewhat more resistant to their chewings.

The Hurley – Durable Dog Bone

The Hurley floats, if your dog actually thinks they’re Jaws what better way to appease their killer instinct. It has a chew proof guarantee and is made from hard plastic ready to tackle the challenges of abuse. Owners rave about it’s resistance.

A perfect option to get you through the warmer months of the year. Available on Amazon

It’s pretty rare to see things manufactured in the USA anymore, but this item is. That’s a huge plus for us.

Elk Antler Dog Chew

Can a dog chew on Elk Antlers? Yes, they can and they have been for years. This is one of the hardest materials to work through. It’s perfectly safe and naturally shed by elk. Reusing natures droppings in a way.  Keep in mind if you have an older dog, or one with dental issues that this may not be the best option.

Nylabone Dura Chew

A flavored bone made of nylon? It comes in bacon? While we might be tempted to try this ourselves, it seems to hold up pretty well to tough chewers. Labeled specifically for large dogs, this is a made in the USA durable toy. As an added benefit, it’s textured. So while your dog is trying their best to destroy it, it actually helps clean their teeth.

With the textured surface it makes it a little easier to rip away from your pal for playtime.

Indestructible Dog Ball – Lifetime Replacement Guarantee

indestructable dog ball

You heard that right. A toy with bold claims of , “virtually indestructible”.  This company offers a lifetime replacement if it isn’t up to par. Bright orange, bouncy, and made for tough chewers; this ball is comprised of rubber. It’s also very orange and reminds us of Tang. See it here

It’s very simple, but it does the trick.

Plush Taco Toy For Your Foodie

taco doy plush toy

Okay this thing will probably get torn to shreds but we had to share it. It’s a freaking squeaky taco that is smiling at us. How adorable.  They also come in varieties of french fries, ice cream, pineapple, and steak. To name a few.. maybe you have a non-chewer and you could take cute pics with this.

We’re getting hungry, or maybe we already were.

Ruffwear Turnup Durable Dog Toy

turnip dog toy

Perhaps your dog is a practicing vegan? Well, they would be in love with our turnip shaped offering.  Chew resistant and made of latex rubber, this toy holds a special hole for treats. So not only can your dog be enamored, but also engaged in the hunt. Aye aye captain!

This is also a great training piece. If you don’t want to simply hand over a treat when your dog does something good, you can give them a little more entertainment with this.

rock dog toy

Another treat hoarding, latex rubber made masterpiece. The Gnawt-a-rock won’t grind your dogs teeth, but it will elicit their imagination. If your dog ends up not liking it you can always use it as a hybrid sort of dice.. double 7’s anyone?

For dogs with harder chomping powers, like a Pit Bull, this is an excellent option. With it’s hard rubber material it’s also great to throw at the park. Just make sure no one else is near by!

Benebone Wishbone Chew Toy

benebone dog chew

Two Ingredients listed: Nylon and Bacon. How these two things come together, we have no freaking idea. However the reviews are sparkling. Dogs love this thing, and it lasts a long time. The flavor choices are: REAL Bacon, REAL Chicken, and REAL Peanut. Yes, they are capitalized just like that. The reality is they are “infused” with real stuff but yeah, I’d prefer it fresh on a plate than in a bone.

Puppy Chew Cotton Rope

Puppy Teething Chew Toy

Carrots are healthy for you, and if you lie to yourself you can still claim that even when they’re made of rope. While a full grown dog may make quick work of these cute cotton concoctions, for a teething puppy they’re perfect. If carrots aren’t your thing, there’s also a giraffe.

Kong Red Rubber

kong dog toy

The original classic. Kong has been manufacturing dog toys for a while now. They started the whole hide the treat fad. Dogs hate them, people love them. These toys aren’t the most durable of all options above, but for a “medium chewer” they work great.

It may have an unusual appearance, but don’t let that fool you. The Kong Red Rubber has been around a long time for a reason. Dogs and owners love it.

Is there such thing as an indestructible dog toy?

As we’ve come to find out first hand, no there isn’t. Dogs love ripping things to shreds don’t they? Carnivores by nature, they are pretty good at it. I think they get it from their wolf brethren. But, a lot of these options we’ve listed above are the closest things we could realistically find to indestructible. If they have a warranty, even better.

Tell us about what your dog likes to chew up in the comments!

The Best 10 Dogs For Kids – Your Rugrats Need Playmates

our list of the best dogs for kids

Love, trust, and friendship are perhaps the biggest thing a family pet can teach. Some dogs have a little more patience than others as a right of genetics. If you are looking for a wholesome addition to your family and don’t mind the potty training; then we have ten choices for you.

10. Beagle

Beagle Puppy Family Dog

Playful, with a calm temperament, the beagle is all about the outdoors. Just like your kids, until virtual reality gets too good.

They range from 12-15 years on average. One of their main complaints is shedding. They shed a decent amount, so if allergies are a concern this may be a negative.

9. Dachschund

dachshund puppy

Oddly proportioned, sometimes stubborn, and devoted. The dachshund is that lovable little guy of the family. They are great cuddle buddies, we have some first hand experience with this.  The label of being stubborn comes from some people having difficulty training them, but fear not they do very well when they’re incentive is food.

8. Labrador Retriever

labrador retriever

Kind, trusting, and always up for a game of fetch. The Labrador has always been a common family pet and will continue to do so. They are forgiving and everyone is their friend by default.

7. Collie

Collie Dog

A beautiful coat and a beautiful personality. The Collie was etched into many peoples hearts when we first saw her as Lassie. They are protective dogs who are very active and friendly. For a medium sized breed their lifespan is also a bit greater than average, they live between 14-16 years. With a beautiful head of hair comes a lot of maintenance. So if you get a collie prepare to be on brush patrol at times!

6. Pug

cute pug

Playful and relaxed you say? We have the dog for you. Two seemingly opposite ends of the spectrum collide in Mr. Chill, the Pug. Perfect for kids because of it’s temperament, the pug likes to have fun. But he’s also down to relax and do nothing in his pajamas all day. They are a low maintenance breed, and outside of some shedding are very easy to take care of.

5. Pomeranian

If you’ve been looking for a cotton ball with legs, the Pomeranian is your answer. They are a sociable breed that loves to play. Not quite as forgiving as some of the more relaxed dogs, we recommend these for kids who are a little bit older. They will live with them into adulthood usually, with their lifespan at about 16 years.

4. Boxer

boxer super manly

Playful and goofy but also cuddly, kids love them just as much as adults. They don’t cause too much trouble and definitely bring lots of joy.

3. Black Mouth Cur

black mouth cur

On the more protective end of family dogs, we have the Black Mouth Cur. A cattle dog with origins from the southern part of the states. They do very well with kids and will watch out for them.

2. Newfoundland Dog

Newfoundland dog

Oranges with their bright glow are in fact perfectly fine for your dog. They do have a lot of sugar, so give them in moderate amounts. Citric acid will not negatively impact your dogs digestion. But it does bother some cats. Although I’ve never heard of a cat eating oranges.

1. Golden Retriever

golden retriever

The epitome of the family dog. Loving and loyal. The Golden Retriever is our top pick as a dog for kids and families. Easy to train, and fun to play with. Shedding isn’t a big problem with Golden’s either.

Manly Dogs

Do you take turns without your blinker? Maybe you have a lifted truck with a muffler kit on it?

You know what we’re talking about. PURE MANLINESS. What can MULTIPLY the juices running through your veins? A macho manly dog of course.  Here’s our list, buckle your seat-belts.

10. Akita

Akita Manly Dog

If you’re cunning, hatching plans to make you the most dominant force in the universe then you NEED an Akita. These dogs are from Japan. They probably used to roll around with Samurai’s scouting out potential weaklings to attack. You can’t mess with that.

They’re described as being courageous, but also dignified. Because after they destroy the opposing army by tearing limb from limb, they’ll hold a burial for you out of respect.

9. Boxer

boxer super manly

Named after a profession with people that sign up to get punched in the face, the boxer doesn’t give a damn who you are. It’s along for the ride if you meet their standards of masculinity. They’re also sweet and pretty cute.

8. Doberman

doberman manly

Look at this girl. She’s thinking, “if only the guys at work were as stoic as my doberman I wouldn’t have to project the void in my life onto a dog.” She needed some freaking MANLINESS in her life because she probably works in an IT department. The answer is the Doberman.

This thing is like the fighter jet of canines. They look like god made them in a wind tunnel to increase their chances of sprinting at you and showing you what real muscle is made of. You can’t stop that.

7. Husky

husky manly

Bright eyes beaming with intelligence. These dogs pull lazy people around in sleds. But guess what? They don’t give a damn! Cause that’s their dog job and you will get no complaints out of a crazy freaking Husky. They can be a super hyper breed and they make great playmates.

6. Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhound

How did a country that went through a famine find a way to feed these MONSTERS. The Irish Wolfhound is a big, bad.. friendly guy. They have shorter lifespans than most dogs because we aren’t meant to enjoy the pinnacle of creation for too long. It’s the same reason we don’t recommend buying one, you might be prompted to get a divorce when you realize something that can’t talk is better company than your SO.

5. Malinois

malinois manly

This is sort of like the German Shepherd but not so mainstream. A blue jean wearing working dog that will sniff out bombs and swoon ladies. Used in enforcement applications with a mouth that looks like a crocodile yawning, you don’t want to mess with this bad boy.

4. Mastiff

mastiff adorable

Wrinkly skin and all, the Mastiff has come to accept itself. Dignified, studious, and cunning. This dog would rather be at home studying on a Friday night than finding the quickest way to barf at a dive bar.

3. Newfoundland Dog

Newfoundland dog

Do you perhaps live in a treacherous environment full of fluffy snow? Here’s your new found friend.  This dog named an Island after himself as a blessing, that they could begin to reach his awesomeness. (don’t google that please)

It might be cold over there, but the 150 lbs of v8 muscle provide him warmth.

2. Rottweiler

Majestic, kind, and full on. The Rottweiler were former herders of livestock, now they herd hearts. It’s the oldest of herding breeds. The wisdom of how to run around things in circles used to be their main occupation. Now girls run circles around them. How much more manly can you get? Not much my friend, not much.

1. Saint Bernard

Bigger, faster, stronger. The saint bernard is a mix between the Hulk and Thor. They can get up to 260 lbs. Thick you say? Yes very thick. You will legitimately need a truck to haul around your mini giant, making this one of the manliest dogs of all.

If you’re living in an apartment.. space is a big deal,  but so is companionship.  Here we give you ten dogs that make trusty adorable friends, and also live well in smaller spaces. In no particular order.

Little City Dog List

10. Yorkshire Terrier(Sassy)

A constant theme among small dogs is confidence. The yorky is no different. It has a beautiful coat and peppy demeanor. It’s classified as being hypoallergenic, if you have allergies you won’t have to worry about this breed worsening them. As an added bonus they do not shed much.

9. Chihuahua

The procession of barks followed by getting in the “safe space” of a chihuahua can be a bit annoying! They are a polarizing breed and people seem to either absolutely love them, or despise them. We think the haters just haven’t had the pleasure of having one in their lives. If you’d like to read our breed breakdown of chihuahuas you can do so here

They can live up to 20 years, among the highest lifespan of all canines.

8. Dachschund

dachshund puppy

Adorable, affectionate, and very loyal. The Dachshund is the perfect pet to greet you from a long day at work. They do shed a bit and are not the best for people with allergies. If you’re wondering about the roots of their name, it was first spotted in 18th century books. “Dachs Kriecher” means badger crawler, their original purpose. Little hunters these buggers were!

7. Chinese Crested

chinese crested

Sometimes you just need to look at something hideous to feel better about yourself. When facebook is down and you can’t find your ex’s new partner, you could always buy a Chinese Crested. We kid we kid. This breed comes in two varieties, with the hairless type resembling something a little less mainstream in dog taste.

6. Havanese

The national dog of Cuba, can you feel the rhythm? This beautiful little chap has a lot of hair. They’re very attentive, respond well, and caring. Their coat is soft and to boot they are thought of as an intelligent breed. All of this makes them the perfect apartment companion.

5. Pomeranian

Little balls of fluffy energy, Pomeranians make great pets for home owners of a more active lifestyle. They do well in apartments but also would love to play fetch with you all day. Originating from Germany/Poland, their name hails  from a region called Pomerania.  They need a bit of attention for their coat and shed more than most dogs on this list.

4. Maltese

Would you ever think a dog like this would be suitable for people with allergies? We didn’t at first, but it turns out they’re just fine. They are a toy dog breed from the Mediterranean region.  With a lovely temperament, these loyal dogs make great pets. They are a little less active than other dogs on this list. Safe to say they’d be up for a “netflix and chill” night with you if your date suggested Burger King as the first place to get dinner..

3. Peekapoo

Yes yes we know, it sounds similar to peekaboo! This breed is a mix between a Pekignese and a Poodle. They almost look like golden-doodles except..they just never really grow. Taking traits from both parents, they can be easy to train(poodles) and very affectionate(Pekignese).

2. Pug

cute pug

Although the picture might make you think of E.T. , we promise this is an actual dog. Just testing out spring fashion trends. The pug is another dog that can be very affectionate. The breed can suffer from some breathing issues due to their anatomy, but tends to live in the same range as most other small breeds. About 12 to 15 years.  If you’ve seen one out in the wild you’ll notice they tend to be pretty relaxed. If this picture doesn’t prove this point I’m not sure what would!

1. Japanese Chin

japanese chin

Now some of you may look at this picture and jump to the conclusion that this breed would be on the short bus. How could you??? Japanese royalty loved these dogs. They generally represented nobility. Also thought to be one of the most “cat-like” canines. Independent, sassy, and affectionate when they want to be. That’s the Japanese Chin for you.

If you’d like to hear about low maintanence dogs, and have a little more space.. we have another article here!

As always, we recommend fresh over frozen. But, plenty of people feed frozen blueberries to their dogs as well. As long as they aren’t packed with sugar, the good is pretty damn good.

Dog Breed: The German Shepherd

I’ll Bite The Shit Out Of You

German Shepherds have bitten the shit out of many a bad guy. Given the classification as a “working dog”, the breed has been found especially useful to humans. Did I mention they’ll bite the shit out of you if you’re a bad guy? Cops love them for their shit biting of people capabilities.

German Shepherds have a high aptitude of learning. Trained properly they make great pets. Imagine having an obedient protector in your household? Dog food is much cheaper than a subscription to a security company.

The breed actually isn’t old at all in terms of age. They originated in 1899. In dog breed lineage land, that aint much. Keep them active. They need to be outdoors, they NEED to get exercise. If you don’t have the space, don’t get this dog.

German Shepherd

  • Sharp As a Tac
  • Obedient
  • Easy to Train

Don’t let that short coat fool you! German Shepherds shed yearlong, it is one of their drawbacks. If you have a specific question about them that we haven’t answered, there is a great forum for just that purpose.

German Shepherd Lifespan

They typically live 9-13 years. A common and debilitating problem with the breed is hip dysplasia.

Like all similar working dogs, they need a lot of exercise. Naturally high motor breeds, these are not the type to do well cooped up in an apartment all day.  It would be a disservice to their mental and physical health to not give this breed adequate room to explore. They’re naturally curious and enjoy seeing whats happening in the outside world.

Famous German Shepherds

Bullet the Wonder dog was a dog actor from the Roy Rodgers show. Over a hundred episodes, he had a lot of airtime! This picture warms my heart, look at that cowboy. When you hear the phrase “wonder dog”, this is thought to be the show that set it in motion.

German Shepherd Price

If you get your dog from a respected breeder, they are generally affordable. Between 300-900 dollars. Always be sure to research the breeder as well and make sure they’re not just trying to flip a buck!

Obedient, strong, fast, and smart. The German Shepherd is one of our favorite breeds. If you have any pictures of yours that you would like to share, hit us up on @zeuspetsofficial to be featured 🙂

Reasons why your dog is pooping too much

It’s 11 am on a Sunday. I’m happy that I get to sleep in. Then I realize, the roommates dog is at my bed. Clearly distressed, she has something that needs to get out.

That’s alright, I’ll cover for my roomie. Little did I know what I was in for. The door opens, she bolts. The sound barrier may have shattered in her wake, I was too groggy to realize. To my horror, a poop factory turned on once we reached the grass. I only brought one bag and that wasn’t going to cut it.

I bring back three more. She must have pooped for 3 minutes. Finding separate spots to blast. Finally I’d made it through. Down to my last bag, the waste was reclaimed by the trash can and off to a landfill to give flies another happy day.

What causes dogs to poop a lot? I had heard it can be a poor diet. After checking the brand of the roommates dog I figured that must be the case.

My guess is, it’s because the poor ingredients aren’t digested as well. The answer is I don’t know as of yet, I just wanted to update with that little experience. 🙂

You thought money was enough? Well, when the fat wad of cash is weighing down your pants and your face is stuffed with niangao, expect grandma to slap you in the gut with a present! Doesn’t this sound delightful? It’s usually food, too.

The Chihuahua(A dragon in a dog)

A Bundle Of Sassyness

Have you ever been walking down the street and caught yourself startled by a demonic procession of barks? You look around, it takes you a second… What was that? Is that.. a dog? When your view finally settles and your eyes keep gazing lower and lower, finally you see it. It’s a god damn Chihuahua.(And we love them for it).

Once you get past the obvious questions.. how do those eyeballs fit in that tiny head?! Then you can realize they’re actually kind of cute. It’s a very polarizing breed. People either love them or they don’t. To the people who are in the hater category, it’s only because they haven’t yet had the pleasure to befriend one of the little devils. We introduce to you, the Chihuahua!

  • Thinks It Can Kill You
  • Tolerates Your Presence For Food
  • The Canine Equivalent To a Barking AK-47

Have you ever caught yourself wondering on a slow day at work where their name comes from, but were too lazy to google it? This passing thought happened to us to, we finally had to research it for you. It’s a state in Mexico. Their history is uncertain but they are believed to have descended from a companion breed called the Techichi. There is evidence of Techchis on pots as early as 300 BC. Pretty cool eh?

Chihuahua Lifespan

These little balls of short haired fire live about 12 to 20 years. Longer than average! So that you get to enjoy their little tail waggings and attempts to fit a tennis ball in their mouth.

Famous Chihuahaus

Remember Legally Blonde? Maybe? Well if you do, there was a dog in there called Bruiser. Tinkerbell belonged to Paris Hilton and is also an honorable mention.

While those might be appetizers, the bread and butter will always be the Taco Bell Chihuahua. Maybe you weren’t around to witness those commercials, but they tugged at our heart strings. They evoked emotion. It was a romantic symphony that may or may not have made us want tacos. But, damn it was beautiful.

A steady diet of chalupas is suitable. In all seriousness the smaller breed does lend itself to some typical symptoms. Their eyes are prone to infections and injuries. Also, since their teeth are very close they have weaker roots in their gums. Dental care is something to take serious with this breed.
